Outgoing Governor Gwendolyn Garcia recently attended the 50th China-Philippines Friendship Day celebration as guest of honor during a commemorative dinner and cultural event. The occasion, hosted by the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Cebu and led by Consul General Zhang Zhen, marked five decades of formal diplomatic ties between the Philippines and China—established in 1975 but grounded in centuries of shared trade, culture, and heritage.

In her keynote speech, Governor Garcia highlighted the longstanding historical and cultural connection between Filipinos and the Chinese community, especially in Cebu, where Chinese influence has contributed greatly to commerce, agriculture, and the local identity.

She also emphasized the significance of Cebu’s sisterhood agreements with Chinese provinces such as Fujian and Guangdong, and acknowledged China’s ongoing support in the fields of education, healthcare, and culture. “This celebration is not just a reflection of the past 50 years of diplomacy, but a hopeful step forward through collaboration and mutual respect,” Garcia noted.

Consul General Zhang echoed these sentiments, affirming China’s commitment to deepening its friendship and cooperation with the Philippines. “The Filipino-Chinese friendship in Cebu is a living truth,” she said. “Let our shared values protect peace and inspire prosperity.”

Infrastructure Projects

Following the celebration, Governor Garcia continued her work on local infrastructure by inaugurating a ₱40.1 million road project in Moalboal on June 11. Alongside Moalboal Mayor Inocentes Cabaron, Garcia led the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Phase III of the Poblacion-Bugho Road.

The 2.13-kilometer road, funded by the Cebu Provincial Government, features a 6.10-meter width and 9-inch cement thickness. It offers motorists an alternative route to decongest traffic on the town’s main road.

“This is part of our commitment that every Sugbuanon should receive first-class service from the provincial government,” Garcia stated.

Mayor Cabaron expressed gratitude, saying, “We will never forget the governor’s invaluable contribution to the people of Moalboal.”

In Carmen town, Garcia spearheaded a series of ribbon-cutting ceremonies on June 10 for three major road developments.

According to Sugbo News, the Capitol’s official media arm, the projects covered road sections in Barangays Ipil, Dawis Norte, Triumpo, and Poblacion. Garcia and Carmen Mayor Carlo Villamor led the opening of the Dawis-Triumpo Road Section—a 1.54-kilometer road with a 6.1-meter width and 23-centimeter thickness, costing around ₱25 million.

They also inaugurated the Triumpo Road Section, a 1.62-kilometer stretch costing ₱26.1 million, with a 5-meter width. Additionally, the Ipil-Poblacion Road Section was opened, covering 1.1 kilometers and funded with ₱21.4 million.
